I’m With the DJ: DJ Black Dominoes

Meet Kellen a.k.a. DJ Black Dominoes.

Weekly Residencies: When in Atlanta, I do Top Flr (on Ponce) every Friday night from 10pm-late, and the Sound Table (Edgewood & Boulevard) three times a month.
I’m also lucky enough to sometimes guest at places like MJQ and El Bar on Ponce and Graveyard Tavern in East Atlanta.

What makes for a good DJ?

Someone who gets a crowd excited with music they haven’t heard before. In 2011, so it’s really easy to hit the internet and download the top 40 or obvious dance tracks and call yourself a DJ — there are a lot of those these days. There is an upside to this, however. Continue reading

I’m With the DJ: DJ Rachael

HPNOTIQ recently caught up with Atlanta DJ Rachael to talk music, partying and the joys of living in Atlanta.

Weekly residencies: None at the moment but I guest DJ at some of the following hot spots: Halo Lounge (Atlanta), W Hotel Atlanta & San Francisco, Bliss Bar (San Francisco)

What makes for a good DJ?

A good DJ is doing more than just mixing and rocking a dance floor, they are making selections that tell a story and create an experience.

What is one of your fondest memories behind the 1s and 2s?

Opening up for one of the lady deejays that inspired me, DJ Colette, at my favorite club in Atlanta, Eleven50.

What other DJs would you love to work with and why?

I’d love to work with my friend and icon, Mark Farina. He mixes the best House music, rocks every dance floor and then transitions to smoky textured down-tempo through his famous Mushroom Jazz compilations. He’s always perfecting the balance and vibe. Continue reading

DJ Kalkutta’s Top 10 Weekend Playlist

Headed out for the weekend? Tune into some tracks from DJ Kalkutta’s weekend playlist as you get ready to hit the town!

1. “Countdown” Beyoncé

The hardest working woman in showbiz is back with her 4th album much to the delight of her “stans”, and this is song another Beyoncé banger waiting to happen.  I love it when she talks about how hard her and Jay-Z ball.  If you also get a weird sense of joy from that then you will love this hard hitting song.

2. “Mr. Saxobeat” Alexandra Stan

As tends to happen with house music, this song blew up in Europe earlier this year and we are just now starting to obsess over it Stateside.  Alexandra Stan fills the void left by Crystal Waters these past 15 years.  If you’re a “Gypsy Woman” fan, then welcome to your new favorite song.

I’m With the DJ: Jeff G

Before joining the exciting Vegas night scene, DJ Jeff G lived a more subdued life as a wedding DJ before getting a gig as a DJ for an 18 and under club. Jeff soon moved to Portland where he deejayed for radio and clubs and then eventually relocated to Las Vegas.

These days you can listen to him daily on Vegas’ Hot 97.5 radio or watch him spin weekly at hot-spots like Voodoo Lounge, the Foundation Room or Insert Coins. HPNOTIQ got a chance to catch up with the Sin City deejay to discuss drunken requests and what he loves most about Vegas.

What makes a good DJ?

Someone who can read a crowd and play music accordingly.

What is one of your fondest memories behind the 1s and 2s:

I’m most fond of the nights that I have no memory of (laughs).

What other DJs would you love to work with? Why?

DJ Exodux. We’ve been friends a long time and I consider him one of the most talented guys in this city.

I’m With the DJ: Jay McCracken

When Atlanta native Jay McCracken isn’t busy playing CEO to his very own production company, serving up drinks behind the bar, or modeling, then you can probably find him spinning at some of the hottest venues in the ATL.

HPNOTIQ got the chance to chat with the versatile McCracken about the makings of a good deejay and what he loves most about his hometown of Atlanta.

What makes for a good DJ?

Good transitions to the next song. Also, being able to understand the concept of producing music.

What is one of your fondest memories behind the 1s and 2s?

When Paris Bennett, from the past American Idol season, stood me up at a club event after I hired her for the night.

I’m With The DJ: DJ Jazmin

Meet New York City native Miss Jazmin, aka DJ Dora. When she isn’t busy driving listeners into the pool from her amazing deejay abilities, you can often find her spinning at Sea Ultra Lounge in the Meat Packing district, or grooving to jams at NYC’s Pacha.

HPNOTIQ had the pleasure of speaking with the proud New Yorker to discuss her love for NYC, good luck records and her most memorable DJ moment.

What makes for a good DJ?

A great DJ possesses the “good ear;” the ability to recognize a good song when they hear one almost instinctively. This DJ will transform a good song into a beat that keeps people moving all night.

What is one of your fondest memories behind the 1s and 2s?

During my second gig, a guy was enjoying the music TREMENDOUSLY. So much, in fact that he stripped down to his boxers and jumped into Sea’s decorative pool, which is fully equipped with a waterfall. This man’s release (or escapade, depending on the narrator) resulted in him being carried out of the club by all of security into a busy New York City street. I mean, I’ve been around excited people, but that was by far THE most entertaining and fulfilling experience to watch. I aspire to move people with my music for the rest of my life. I guess some might move more than others… Continue reading

I’m With the DJ: Chicago’s DJ-Spin

While Chicago’s own DJ Spin may forever call the Windy City home, his spinning abilities far exceed the confines of the Chi.

Aside from being a regular disk jockey for Chicago’s B96 and KGGI in Riverside, California, Spin has worked in venues all across the world ranging from Vegas, Costa Rica and Europe.

HPNOTIQ recently got the chance to catch up with the Chi-town deejay to discuss his most hated music requests and which The Fresh Prince of Bel-air star he’s dying to battle.

What makes for a good DJ?

A cool DJ name, a Macbook Pro and good hair — it also helps if you can actually mix two songs together without creating train wrecking.

What is one of your fondest memories behind the 1s and 2s?

I have a lot. I’d say, DJing in a Jungle in Costa Rica, on the beach in San Diego and, as always,  performing at the B96 Summer Bash in Chicago every year in a stadium filled with almost 30,000 people.

What other DJs would you love to work with and why?

I’d like to battle Jazzy Jeff, and if I win I get to throw him out like Uncle Phil on The Fresh Prince of Bel-air. Continue reading

Jive Record’s New Artist Wish Wants You To “Feel Ur Beat!”

Dato’s Law states that wishes expand in direct proportion to the resources available for their gratification. With the world at her feet and unbounded creativity, the artist known simply as Wish is ready to make all her wishes come true through her unique flair, brash image and distinct music style that has already set her apart from her musical peers.

This became evident as Wish took the stage for a room of media elite last night in New York City. And after watching her perform, as well as enjoying the new HPNOTIQ backstage, we can say that this girl not only has the outrageous and eye-catching swagger and style of Nicki Minaj, but the pipes of Beyoncé… not to mention, a definite nod back to the era of Eve.

We got a chance to catch up with Wish about her newly penned deal with Jive Records, what it means to be a strong and independent female, and the release of WISHtape on May 30th. Check out the rest of the interview after the jump as well as videos for her single, “Suga Daddy,” and the premiere of “Feel Ur Beat!”

Let’s start with your name — where does it come from and what does Wish mean to you?

This is the question I get the most, and the answer is way more simple than you probably think. My mother was pregnant, she wished for a girl, and voila! Here I am.

When did your passion for music begin? And is there a specific moment you could pinpoint when you realized that being a singer was something you wanted to pursue professionally?

My passion for music began at a really early age. I grew up in church singing on the choir, but I really wasn’t sold on being an entertainer until I sang in the cafeteria during lunch at school. The principal grabbed the mic and asked who wanted to share talent. I sang “Killing Me Softly” (Lauryn Hill’s version at the time) and when I finished everyone was clapping and shouting. That’s when I thought, I can do this… I like the way it feels, and I wanna be an entertainer. Continue reading

Ke$ha Sing-Talks Her Way Into New York City’s Heart

Wednesday night in New York City, Ke$ha took the stage at Roseland Ballroom and whether or not you are completely sold on her often parodied sing-talk genre, her live performance is not one to be argued with.

The HPNOTIQ crew was in the house as the loveably clumsy electro-popper set off the night surrounded by large-scale diamonds of bright lights and sunglasses shining with neon green.

It being the first time we’ve checked out the dollar-sign embellished singer, we weren’t sure what to expect on this aptly named “Get Sleazy” tour… but Ke$ha delivered her usual almost slapstick version of a Britney Spears concert with stride.

Between rowdy shenanigans — like trying to pants her guitarist, pulling a fan on stage to only then strap him to a chair while ultimately “playing” with a guy dressed in costume as, well, his nether parts — and belting lyrics about boozing and sex, Ke$ha has definitely defined and embraced her niche market. And it would be an understatement to say that we had a blast!

And as if we couldn’t ask for anymore, the performance was topped off with confetti, the smashing of a piñata and a cover of The Beastie Boy’s “You Gotta Fight For Your Right (To Party)!” which Ke$ha surely does everyday. It’s definitely safe to say that our girl Lives Louder!

Check out photos from the show below and let us know what you think about Ke$ha’s on-stage antics…
