Meet New York City native Miss Jazmin, aka DJ Dora. When she isn’t busy driving listeners into the pool from her amazing deejay abilities, you can often find her spinning at Sea Ultra Lounge in the Meat Packing district, or grooving to jams at NYC’s Pacha.
HPNOTIQ had the pleasure of speaking with the proud New Yorker to discuss her love for NYC, good luck records and her most memorable DJ moment.
What makes for a good DJ?
A great DJ possesses the “good ear;” the ability to recognize a good song when they hear one almost instinctively. This DJ will transform a good song into a beat that keeps people moving all night.
What is one of your fondest memories behind the 1s and 2s?
During my second gig, a guy was enjoying the music TREMENDOUSLY. So much, in fact that he stripped down to his boxers and jumped into Sea’s decorative pool, which is fully equipped with a waterfall. This man’s release (or escapade, depending on the narrator) resulted in him being carried out of the club by all of security into a busy New York City street. I mean, I’ve been around excited people, but that was by far THE most entertaining and fulfilling experience to watch. I aspire to move people with my music for the rest of my life. I guess some might move more than others…
What other DJs would you love to work with and why?
Definitely The Cube Guys and Landmark. They are a successful team of European producers, executing some of the most euphoric tracks I’ve had the pleasure of listening to. I adore their individuality and I’m inspired by their unique talent. To make a song with them would be a dream come true.
What are some of your favorite places to party?
I love Pacha, hands down! I enjoy going to and adding to the spirit of a huge club, where (almost) no one knows me. When I’m in Pacha, the only thing I think about is the music surrounding and lifting me — contrary to some negatively expressed opinions about the venue. I mean, I’ve partied in places that are all about “status,” but who cares about those inconsequential details when you’re free and in the presence of those you know? Let’s take a shot and dance!
What are three songs guaranteed to make everybody dance?
“Stereo Love” by Edward Maya – A mainstream radio hit that captured listeners from every genre
“It’s Time for the Perculator” by Baltimore Club music – Makes people dance
“Just Do It” by Ron Carrol – Even those who hate house music have to move to this
Do you have a good luck record?
Absolutely, “Sweet Disposition” by the Temper Traps. It’s a special song whose meaning will always put me at ease. It will forever be unique to me, as I’m sure it is to every listener who identifies with it.
What are the top 5 songs playing on your ipod right now?
What is your most loathed request?
“Fly Like A G6” – Not my style at all
What’s your favorite thing about this city?
New York has the most interesting people with the most interesting personalities. Hate us or love us, everyone can agree that nothing beats a true New Yorker.
