HPNOTIQ recently caught up with Atlanta DJ Rachael to talk music, partying and the joys of living in Atlanta.
Weekly residencies: None at the moment but I guest DJ at some of the following hot spots: Halo Lounge (Atlanta), W Hotel Atlanta & San Francisco, Bliss Bar (San Francisco)
What makes for a good DJ?
A good DJ is doing more than just mixing and rocking a dance floor, they are making selections that tell a story and create an experience.
What is one of your fondest memories behind the 1s and 2s?
Opening up for one of the lady deejays that inspired me, DJ Colette, at my favorite club in Atlanta, Eleven50.
What other DJs would you love to work with and why?
I’d love to work with my friend and icon, Mark Farina. He mixes the best House music, rocks every dance floor and then transitions to smoky textured down-tempo through his famous Mushroom Jazz compilations. He’s always perfecting the balance and vibe.
What are some of your favorite places to party?
Halo Lounge in Atlanta
Eighteenth Street Lounge in DC
Smart Bar in Chicago
Mighty in San Francisco
What are three songs guaranteed to make everyone dance?
Do you have a good luck record?
Not a “good luck” record, but my Serato records are good luck green and I seem to be doing just fine rockin’ those on the decks.
What are the top five songs playing on your iPod right now?
And all tracks from Bonobo… on repeat.
What is your most loathed request?
“Can you play something I can dance too?” – while everyone else is dancing.
What’s your favorite thing about this city?
The locals that support the music scene and the dancers that love a good floor. We have a long way to go in Atlanta and I hope to see more diversity and open music minds in the years to come.
