You know that euphoric feeling you get when you step into a pair of jeans that make you feel like a million bucks? Well, according to Jessica Matlock, there’s a science behind that feeling associated with great fashion.
Matlock, a fashion lover, realized that when you put on a great outfit and look your best, you begin to feel your best as well. That’s why she created Be your Best you Studios (ByBy) where she combines fashion and psychology to help clients look and feel great.
What was your inspiration to start this styling studio?
The inspiration came from my research on fashion and psychology. I started to learn that when you change a person’s body — change the way she dresses, does her makeup, does her hair makeup — there’s something that happens to that person on the inside. I started to see there’s a real transformation that takes place and I wanted to create a safe environment for my clients to have that experience.
What kind of services do you provide here?
I am a head-to-toe makeover specialist. I wear so many different hats. Sometimes I’m a stylist, also a makeup artist, I’m an art director for photography shoots I also work on developing a cohesive personal brand as well as a corporate brand. And as well as developing a sense of personal style for individuals.
What advice would you give girls who are looking to make a change in their lives for the New Year?
My advice would be, take the time to learn about what you want. Learn about who you want to be and learn about what your budget is and how much you really want to invest in that. It’s really not as intimidating as it seems. I know a lot of people get caught up in wanting to lose weight, or wanting to chop their hair off at the new year, but a lot of it is tailored to who you really are and what your personality is and finding the right person to make that happen for you. It’s funny you ask that because BY BY is actually promoting a “New Year a New You” campaign, which includes six weeks of low payments and learning about all aspects of who you are, who you want to be and who you want to become. It covers head-to-toe; makeup and styling.
What is ByBy looking to accomplish in 2012?
ByBy in 2012 wants to be a major entity in the fashion world, as well as the psychology world. ByBy wants to definitely show and prove to people out there, that when you change the way you dress, you’re going to change the way you feel. There’s no research being done on this now, there’s no academic classes being taught in fashion institutes or universities. We want to be in the world and show people there is indeed a psychology of fashion and there are people that care about others and helping them to evolve their personal style according to who they really are, not who the fashion trends dictate they should be.
